What Your Car’s Fault Codes Are Really Telling You

A dashboard warning light can leave you guessing. Is it a minor fault or something that needs a mechanic? A TOPDON scanner helps you start with information instead of guesses. It connects to a vehicle’s diagnostic port and reads data from the car’s computer systems.

But not every model works the same way. Some are small tools that pair with a phone. Others have built-in screens and can run more detailed tests. Before buying, check the functions, vehicle coverage, and possible software costs.

The goal is to understand what is happening, not to replace a mechanic’s judgment. Knowing the limits of the tool helps you avoid buying unnecessary parts or paying for features you will never use.

What the Tool Can Tell You

Now most modern vehicles have OBD2 systems. If there is an issue detected by the vehicle a code will often be stored in the computer. A compatible code reader can be used to give you some information.

The code itself may tell you what is wrong. For example code P0301 means there is a misfire in cylinder one. This doesn’t mean that there is a faulty spark plug but there could be any number of reasons. This could be a faulty spark plug, ignition coil, fuel injector or anything else. Using the code helps narrow down your search.

Many models allow you to view live data. This allows you to view things like engine speed, coolant temperature and any sensors that are supported. Some models also let you view freeze frame data. This gives information on what was happening when the fault occurred. This can help you work out if the fault was causing an issue on cold start, idle or on the move.

Why Reading a Code Is Only the First Step

Although the scanner can give an indication of where to look, you will need to identify what is causing the fault so that it can be rectified. By clearing the warning light before repairing the fault it may cause the problem to be hidden temporarily. It may also cause the emission readiness monitors to reset meaning you will have to wait longer to pass your inspection. Always save the information relating to the fault.

Choosing Between TOPDON Models

TOPDON offer tools designed for a variety of tasks. This will depend on whether you wish to troubleshoot a light or diagnose multiple vehicle systems whilst carrying out repairs.

TopScan for Phone-Based Checks

TopScan series are OBD2 devices which connect to your mobile application. The series includes three types: Lite, Pro and Master. Each has its own set of services available. Lite has 8 services, Pro has 13 and Master has 30.

You need to check what phone you have and what features will be available on your vehicle. Whilst convenient to keep in a glovebox, you will have to make sure that your application is installed and phone is fully charged.

ArtiDiag for a Standalone Screen

The ArtiDiag range are handheld, tablet styled devices that offer different features depending on whether you want basic or more comprehensive tools.

TOPDON describes the ArtiDiag900BT as a 7″ wireless device that offers full system scanning for supported vehicles. It also has bi-directional control and 28 service functions. Whilst the dedicated screen can be useful it may be overkill if you just need a simple tool for basic engine checks.

Phoenix for Workshop Tasks

Phoenix models are aimed at workshops and may have coding and/or support for advanced vehicle protocols. Take care around coverage and software. Price is not as important as support for your car/repair.

Features That Make a Difference in Daily Use

A basic code reader covers simple checks. The useful extras depend on the problems you expect to face.

Full-System Scanning

Engine fault codes are only one part of vehicle diagnostics. A tool with full-system access may also read faults from the transmission, anti-lock brakes, airbags, and other supported modules. But full-system does not mean every function works on every vehicle.

Live Data and Active Tests

Live data lets you compare sensor readings over time. You might watch coolant temperature as the engine warms. An active test, also called bidirectional control, goes further. On supported cars, the scanner can ask a component to operate, such as a cooling fan. This can help separate an electrical fault from a failed part. Follow safety procedures: moving parts may activate without warning.

Maintenance and Reset Functions

Some models offer oil-service resets, battery registration or reset functions, electronic parking brake service modes, and ABS bleeding. These options can be useful after maintenance, but they are not universal. A reset does not perform the repair. Follow the service manual for brake work and other safety-related tasks.

Check Vehicle Coverage Before You Buy

The topdon scanners may not provide full functionality, even if they plug into your car’s standard diagnostics port. Start by noting down your car’s make/model/year/engine type then check with the manufacturers list of support.

If your vehicle is newer, some have security gateways which can limit certain functions, or new protocols. This can vary between devices and may require extra access.

If your car is older or is not sold in the USA then please check carefully.

If you are going to use it on 2 cars then check each one individually. You may have a device that will reset the oil reminder on one model but only read engine codes on another.

Understand Update Plans and Subscription Costs

There are additional costs to consider. Some features will be available for free initially but will require a subscription after this.

TOPDON have listed which features will be free and which are advanced and require a subscription on their website for the TopScan range. When looking at their product pages for the USA, you can see that there is 1 year of free updates. Then you have the option to pay for an annual subscription for the Lite, Pro and Master versions. For the ArtiDiag900BT there are 2 years of free updates.

Before paying make sure:

What features will still be available after your plan runs out? Will you have to pay to renew to get new vehicle coverage? What is the price per year in your country?

Whilst some basic functions may still be available after the subscription runs out, it may be cheaper to buy a simpler tool that already does what you need rather than paying for multiple years of renewal.

A Sensible Way to Use Your First Scan

Park the vehicle and engage the handbrake. Set the ignition as indicated by the tool. Locate the OBD2 port (usually underneath the dashboard) on a compatible vehicle and connect the device.

Use the prompts in the app or on the screen. Log the fault codes and any associated information. Refer to a trusted repair manual or other reliable diagnostic information.

Do not assume that your car is safe to drive if the warning relates to brakes, steering, overheating or any other safety related area.

Only clear the code if required to do so after repairing the issue. It can be a useful piece of evidence that you had a successful scan but does not guarantee that all issues have been resolved.

Conclusion

A TOPDON scanner can help a car owner ask better questions and a technician work through faults with more useful data. The key is choosing the level of tool you will actually use. Check the exact vehicle coverage, understand the difference between code reading and real diagnosis, and read the update terms before spending money. A well-matched scanner is more helpful than one loaded with features your car cannot use.
